Red Cross Responds to Clarke County, Miss Apartment Fire

MONDAY, MARCH 11, 2013, MERIDIAN, MISS. – This morning disaster action team members from the American Red Cross East Central Mississippi Chapter responded to an eight-unit apartment fire in Clarke County. Three units were affected, one sustained major damage with the other two incurring minor damages. Red Cross provided food, clothing, linens and partner-agency referrals for the family whose apartment sustained major damage. Red Cross continues to work with the other affected-families to identify their immediate needs.

The Red Cross recommends two easy steps to help protect your home and loved ones from a fire: get a smoke alarm and create a fire escape plan.

o Place smoke alarms on every level of your home, including bedrooms.

o Test smoke alarms once a month and replace batteries at least once a year.

o Have a plan in place can help you escape, including at least two ways to escape from every room of your home and a meeting spot at a safe distance from your home.

o Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it at least twice a year.

o According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half.
