Red Cross Responds to Large Number of Fires in Pee Dee
Since March 1, 2013, in the Pee Dee Chapter alone, the Red Cross has responded to the needs of 64 families, providing immediate relief to 168 adults and children.

FLORENCE, S.C., Monday, April 15, 2013 – The Red Cross has been very busy responding to home fires over the past 45 days in the Pee Dee area. Since March 1, 2013, in the Pee Dee Chapter alone, the Red Cross has responded to the needs of 64 families, providing immediate relief to 168 adults and children.

“Fires are the biggest disaster threat across the country,” said Linda Boone-Smith, executive director, American Red Cross, Pee Dee Chapter. “It is because of our volunteers and donors that we are able to meet the immediate needs of families after they have been devastated by a fire. Lately, we have seen a high number of fires, and we have been very busy responding throughout Pee Dee area.”

Each fire is devastating, and the Red Cross is there to meet the immediate needs that families have for temporary shelter, food, clothing and health and mental health services. Since the beginning of the fiscal year, the Pee Dee Chapter has responded to the needs of 230 families, providing immediate relief to 752 adults and children.

The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies solely on the generosity of financial donors to respond to disasters. To support the American Red Cross, please make a financial donation today by calling (843) 662-8121, visiting Redcross.org/PeeDee or mailing a check to the American Red Cross, 1601-A West Lucas Street, Florence, SC 29501.

Just as the Red Cross prepares year-round, the organization also recommends community members and businesses to have a plan and to be prepared in the event of a fire. The Red Cross recommends taking some of the following steps:

• Install smoke alarms on each level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside of sleeping areas.

• Use the test button to test each smoke alarm once a month. All smoke alarm batteries need to be replaced once a year.

• Have a fire escape plan that includes at least two escape routes from every room in the home and chose a convenient meeting place at a safe distance from your home.

• Practice your escape plan at least twice a year with all household members.

The Pee Dee Chapter serves Chesterfield, Dillon, Darlington, Marlboro, Florence and Marion counties and is part of the American Red Cross, Palmetto SC Region.
