The American Red Cross is providing shelter, food, emotional support and help with other basic needs for people affected by a multi-unit apartment fire that resulted in the evacuation of two apartment buildings near 17th and Peoria streets in Aurora last last night.
Forty-one people checked in at the Red Cross shelter overnight; about half were from the apartment building where the fire occurred and which suffered significant damage, and about half were from a neighboring complex that was evacuated in relation to the fire. Residents of the undamaged building were allowed to return home this morning.
Red Cross workers at the shelter are providing food, emotional support, health services and are working to identify and meet clients' immediate needs, such as shoes, clothing and medication. The Red Cross also also dispatched a mobile feeding vehicle early this morning to provide water and snacks for residents and first responders.
