Red Cross Trains Aspiring Babysitters

Northeastern NY Babysitter Training Day
The course provides students with materials that are useful both in class and when they start babysitting.

The American Red Cross Northeastern New York Region (ARCNENY) is highlighting its babysitter’s training by offering a day-long course for kids between the ages of 11 and 15.

Red Cross chapters throughout the region will hold the course on President’s Day - Monday, February 18, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be a fee of $85.00 for the course including material costs.

Babysitting is often a teenager’s first business. The Red Cross Babysitter’s Training course teaches young people how to care for infants and children, handle emergencies such as injuries and accidents, stay safe, recognize safety and hygiene issues, and communicate with parents. Just as importantly, it teaches lifelong entrepreneurial and career development skills.

“The feedback I get from the class is very positive; students in the class want to be there and are motivated to learn,” said Peggy O’Conner Sullivan, American Red Cross instructor. “Parents will stop me years after their child has taken my class, to tell me how much they enjoyed it, and how successful they’ve been at babysitting.”

Instructors will be covering many important life skills. Those enrolled in this course can be expected to learn:

  • Leadership training
  • The business of babysitting, including how to set your pricing
  • Understanding and caring for kids from 0 to 10
  • Safety skills: picking up, holding, feeding, and diapering infants and toddlers
  • First Aid
  • Résumé building and interviewing tips
  • The course provides students with materials that are useful both in class and when they start babysitting, including a compact emergency reference guide, an interactive CD-ROM featuring an activity booklet with games, songs, recipes and other activities, an electronic babysitting client organizer and much more.

Last year more than 125,000 youth enrolled in approximately 12,000 American Red Cross Babysitters Training Courses. Certified instructors have been teaching these essential skills to young people for more than 30 years. This course is usually offered twice a month at various Red Cross chapter locations.
