The American Red Cross Northeastern New York Region’s (ARCNENY) Services to Armed Forces (SAF) office recently donated Wii Game Systems to Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY and to the Castle Point Campus, VA Hudson Valley Health Care System in Castle Point, NY for patient therapeutic needs in honor of March as American Red Cross Month.
“We hope that through this donation, even in a small way, we can help provide physical, mental, social and emotional healing through the use of this equipment in therapeutic services,” said Dianna Rios, SAF Manager for ARCNENY. “It was a wonderful experience to meet with the physicians, recreational therapy professionals, voluntary services officers and Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) volunteers to discuss the veterans’ needs and develop a plan to provide support.”
Using funds from a Red Cross 2013 SAF Grant, the ARCNENY SAF office augmented existing programs at the facilities by providing the game systems for therapeutic support, recreation and/or other therapy programs for patients and their families.
In a letter sent from Jim Keller, Voluntary Services Officer for Stratton VA Medical Center, he expressed his appreciation to the Red Cross for helping to provide for the therapeutic needs of the increasing number of veterans the hospital serves. “It means so much to veterans when they are remembered and recognized for their service to our country,” said Keller.
Yvette Rodriguez-Cacho, Program Manager of Volunteer Services for Castle Point Campus, remarked that the hospital could not provide for the smaller niceties that make hospitalization more bearable without the support of the Red Cross. “Your thoughtfulness reflects the concern that you feel for our veterans and for the service they provided to all of us while in service to our country,” said Rodriguez-Cacho.
