Red Cross responds to Evacuation in Grand Junction

The American Red Cross Western Colorado Chapter helped dozens of people in response to an evacuation ordered due to a gas line fire at 7th and Orchard in Grand Junction on Tuesday, March 19.

Red Cross volunteers opened a shelter at Grand Junction High School, 1400 N. 5th St., last night. Fifteen evacuated residents stayed overnight. Red Cross workers also contacted two families whose homes were destroyed in the fire; they had places to stay last night and Red Cross provided assistance to replace clothing and shoes lost in the explosion.

With evacuees being allowed to return to their homes today, we anticipate closing the shelter sometime today but will ensure that all affected residents have shelter before doing so.
