Red Cross Arranges Emergency Lodging, Provides Additional Assistance
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE … (Rutland, VT – June 10, 2013) Around ten o’clock last night, the on-call American Red Cross duty officer received word that a 3-unit apartment house at 44 Pine Street in Rutland, VT had fallen prey to fire. It appeared that the residents would be out of their homes and in need of help. Members of the Rutland Disaster Action Team were dispatched to meet with those affected.
Upon arriving on the scene, the trained Red Cross volunteers met with the displaced to determine their emergency needs. Soon, temporary lodging had been arranged for everyone and assistance provided to help with food, clothing and storage containers. The resident of one unit was a single adult, the second unit an adult couple and the third an adult and two young children. While the fate of the apartment units was unclear, the individuals and families impacted by the blaze would be squared away for the night and better prepared to tackle their next steps this morning.
“For someone forced from their home by disaster, it is very disorienting,” said Larry Crist, Regional Executive of the Vermont & the New Hampshire Upper Valley American Red Cross. “That is why it is so important to meet with them quickly to let them know that help is available,” he added.
