Sonoco Donates $20,000 to Support Red Cross Disaster Relief in SC

Support Red Cross Disaster Relief
There has been a large increase in our local responses to home fires, and it is through the generosity of local businesses and community members that we are able to respond each and every day.

With the drastic increase in home fires this year, Sonoco Products Company (NYSE: SON) was actively looking for a way to help. Assistance came in the form of a $20,000 donation to the American Red Cross to support local disaster relief. Sonoco is now asking the community to join them in supporting the organization and challenges each person to make a difference by making a financial donation to the Red Cross.

“We really hope this helps to jump start contributions for this important effort,” said Roger Schrum, vice president of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations for Sonoco. “The Pee Dee has been home to Sonoco for 114 years and the area is home to so many of our employees. One of our foundational beliefs is to always do the right thing and in this case there was no doubt that this was the right thing to do for our community and for our employees who live here.”

Fires are the biggest disaster threat across the country. This year, the Red Cross has seen a high number of fires and has been very busy responding to disasters every 6.5 hours across the Palmetto SC Region, which serves 35 counties in South Carolina. Since the beginning of the Fiscal Year, July 1, 2012, the Palmetto SC Region has responded to the needs of 1,423 families, providing immediate relief to 4,649 adults and children. The Red Cross is there to meet the immediate needs that families have for temporary shelter, food, clothing and health and mental health services.

“We are very grateful for Sonoco’s ongoing support of the Red Cross,” said Linda Boone-Smith, executive director, American Red Cross, Pee Dee Chapter. “There has been a large increase in our local responses to home fires, and it is through the generosity of local businesses and community members that we are able to respond each and every day.”

The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies solely on the generosity of financial donors to respond to disasters.
