Statement on International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is currently conducting a feasibility study to determine if a conference center on the site of their current operational base camp would be beneficial to the people of Haiti in the long term by providing a sustainable revenue stream to support the humanitarian work of the Haitian Red Cross. The land was purchased by the International Federation after the 2010 earthquake to house Red Cross responders and serve as a logistical hub for the relief and recovery effort. The American Red Cross has made no commitment to contribute to this project and no money donated to the American Red Cross has been spent on this endeavor to date. The American Red Cross will continue to assess this project’s potential and would only support it if a strong business plan indicates it would be an efficient way to support the humanitarian work of the Haitian Red Cross and it would benefit the people of Haiti.
