The American Red Cross continues to provide emergency relief for the remote U.S. territory of Saipan following Tropical Storm Goni and Typhoon Soudelor. The two storms hit Saipan in succession over the past couple weeks, leaving most of the island without power, water and sewer facilities.
Red Cross services to island residents have included critical relief supplies, food, sheltering support, health services and emotional support.
SAIPAN RESIDENTS SHARE THEIR STORIES “We need Red Cross assistance and I'm glad they’re here,” said Jaressa Palacios, a resident of Saipan. Palacios received assistance from the Red Cross after her roof was severely damaged during the typhoon.
Alpha Jane Camacho says she’s still in shock after enduring Typhoon Soudelor’s fury. “This is really difficult,” she said. “I thought we were going to die in that house.” Camacho, who has two small children, said her family had just moved into their house shortly before the storm hit. Typhoon Soudelor wiped out not only their home, but everything in it. “It’s a big relief that the Red Cross is helping. The assistance they are providing allows me to buy diapers, a blow up mattress, pillows and milk.”
Kristine Munar, who works as a nurse, took photos during and just after Typhoon Soudelor severely damaged her home. All of Munar’s personal items were ruined in the storm. With no electricity, water or a sturdy roof, Munar is appreciative of the Red Cross providing relief. “I can now replace some of my personal belongings, like clothes and shoes,” Munar said. “The food and water is very much appreciated. We’re gathering rain water as we can.”
“We’re happy the Red Cross is helping on the island,” said Maileen Edquiba. “We need it.” Edquiba sat down with a Red Cross worker to review what assistance the Red Cross can provide after Typhoon Soudelor severely damaged her home. She said appreciates what the Red Cross is doing for her, her family and the people of Saipan.
“PROUD TO BE A RED CROSSER” Marianne Duvendack is a volunteer from Toledo, Ohio. She is helping those impacted by the typhoon receive the assistance they need to begin the recovery process. “I met with an older woman who walked two hours to get to our Red Cross office,” said Duvendack. “The need is great. I’m amazed by the number of people impacted who are helping others, and to see how this process is working regardless of difficult conditions such as language barriers and logistical challenges.”
“Today we are serving as a beacon of hope to a community who has been hit hard twice in two weeks,” said Kristofer "Luke” Bolz, following a Red Cross morning briefing on relief operations for Tropical Storm Goni and Typhoon Soudelor. “Never before have I been more proud to be a Red Crosser."
