A summer camp that will provide a week-long outdoor camping experience for military-connected youth ages 10-16 will be held from July 21-26 at the 4-H Camp Wabasso on Millsite Lake in Redwood, Jefferson County.
“2013 Operation: Military Kids” is open to youth who have a parent or loved one in the deployment cycle. Priority is given to geographically dispersed families, children of fallen warriors, children of a wounded warrior (mentally or physically), and children of a veteran discharged within the past 11 years and deployed two or three times.
“We give priority to the children of National Guard and Reserve Personnel,” said NYS Operation Military Kids Project Director Kitty White. “Children of Active Duty Personnel are put on a waiting list.”
A participant must be 10 by the start of camp and a non-refundable registration fee of $25 is charged to each camper.
The camp features all of the traditional summer camp activities that give youth an opportunity to make lasting friendships with their fellow campers. A highlight of this year’s camp is the new “Tech Discovery Curriculum” in which youth will engage in small group activities using iPads, cameras, GPS units and mobile technology labs.
Sponsored by Cornell University’s Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County, the camp is funded through grants. “We are hoping to apply for a grant to conduct a day camp in Niagara County next year,” White said.
