Volunteer with Dad for Fathers Day

Consider spending quality time with Dad and putting the power of saving lives in his hands.

This Father’s Day, in addition to giving your dad power tools or another tie, consider handing him a drill, spending some quality time together and putting the power of saving lives in his hands.

The Red Cross is recruiting volunteers to canvass a Westminster neighborhood on Saturday, June 20, to install lifesaving smoke alarms and educate residents about fire prevention and escape plans. Families are encouraged to sign up for the event as a fun way to celebrate Father’s Day while also making a difference. The first 50 participants in the Father’s Day volunteer event will be rewarded with free burgers donated by Smashburger.

“It’s a perfect family opportunity to volunteer together, building memories while also potentially saving lives,” said Becky Johnston, a Red Cross intern who is helping to coordinate the event.

Volunteers will visit homes from 9 a.m.-noon, with drills, smoke alarms, batteries and information on how to prevent fires and how to make a family escape plan. The volunteer day is part of an ongoing, five-year campaign by the American Red Cross to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent. Volunteers will canvass neighborhoods in the 80030 zip code, which is one of 10 Colorado areas identified as top priorities for the campaign based on an analysis of recent fire incident data.

Coloradans who are not able to volunteer for the event are encouraged to take these two steps to safeguard their own families against home fires:

1. Ensure you have working smoke alarms – install at least one smoke alarm on each level of your home, especially outside bedrooms. If you have smoke alarms, test them regularly to ensure they work and replace the batteries twice annually.

2. Have and practice a home escape plan – make sure every member of your household knows two routes out of your home and where to meet up in case of an emergency. Make sure they know they have less than 2 minutes to escape safely, and practice your plan so you can escape in that little time.
