Young Florida Man Honored for Saving His Dad
Receives Red Cross Certificate of Merit Lifesaving Award.

The American Red Cross recognized a young Florida man this week with the Certificate of Merit Lifesaving Award for saving his father during a medical emergency while the pair was driving from Tampa to Orlando. The youth was recognized by the Red Cross Greater Orlando Chapter.

Honored was 12-year-old Samuel Latham of Orlando, who combined the lifesaving skills he learned while taking Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding training and use of the Red Cross First Aid App to help save his father’s life. His father experienced chest pain during the father-son ride. His son realized something was wrong so he opened up the Red Cross First Aid App. He thought his father might be having a heart attack so he had his father pull the vehicle over and then called 9-1-1.

The Certificate of Merit Lifesaving Award is the highest lifesaving award given by the Red Cross to an individual or team of individuals who saves or sustains a life by using skills and knowledge learned in a Red Cross Health and Safety Services training course. The certificate is signed by the President of the United States, who serves as Honorary Chairman of the American Red Cross.

TAKE A CLASS Having all family members trained in lifesaving skills is important to help each other and potentially the life of a stranger.
