American Red Cross Supports Emergency Shelters For Flood Victims

Persons in areas with a history of flooding are reminded to have an emergency bag packed and to be ready in the event evacuation is needed, voluntarily or by order.

With close watch on the changing needs of communities affected by rising waterways across the state, the American Red Cross is supporting emergency shelters at the following locations:

Swan Lake Fire Station

14997 South Hwy 88, Althiemer, AR

Wright-Pastoria Volunteer Fire Department

8599 Arkansas Highway 256, Wright, AR

Grand Avenue Baptist Church

3900 Grand Avenue, Fort Smith, AR

Beech Street First Baptist Church Activity Center

601 Beech Street, Texarkana, AR

The shelter at Grand Avenue Baptist is currently in standby status as water levels in the Fort Smith area lessen.

The Red Cross is providing support of cots, blankets and food at the Wright-Pastoria, Swan Lake and Beech Street First Baptist shelters.

Shelter locations and driving directions to these shelters for Arkansas, as well as Oklahoma and Texas, can be found on the Red Cross Emergency App under MAPS, and, on the Red Cross Tornado app under SHELTER. The app can be downloaded for free for iPhone, pads and Android phones.

Persons in areas with a history of flooding are reminded to have an emergency bag packed and to be ready in the event evacuation is needed, voluntarily or by order. “It’s also a good idea to keep cars at least half filled with gas in the event normal routes may require detours because of flooded roads,” stated Red Cross Communications Director Brigette Williams. “The Red Cross Emergency App provides tips on what to do before, during and after floods, as well as alerted individuals to flood watch and warnings.”

For personal comfort, persons coming to the shelter are encouraged to bring the following items as needed:

  • Prescription medication
  • Medical supplies (diabetic, asthma, etc.)
  • Dentures/hearing aids
  • Glasses/contacts + solution
  • A change of clothing
  • Pillow, special blanket
  • Pack of diapers, extra clothes for babies
  • Baby formula/food
  • Snacks
  • Quiet toys, games for kids and adults
  • Extra batteries for electronic equipment + ear plugs/headphones
  • Identification
  • Phone charger
