Peter Balducci, who faithfully served the Red Cross for 46 years, most recently at the San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter, passed away on January 8, 2014.
Balducci has been a DAT volunteer and mentor to many teams over the years. His Red Cross service began in 1967 in New York, where he was on staff at the Greater New York Chapter. There, he worked closely alongside the New York Fire Department. During his tenure there, he served on one of the American Red Cross’ very first Disaster Action Teams. His family moved to California in 1974, at which point he joined the Pomona Chapter.
Balducci, who worked for Southern Wines and Spirits for 30 years, increased his volunteer participation and leadership upon retirement.
At the Pomona Valley Chapter, Peter served as a Board Member, Disaster Chair, Chapter Duty Office and DAT Leader. As Red Cross chapters merged, and then when the Los Angeles Region took shape, Balducci continued to be the positive leader who focused fellow Disaster Responders on the mission and the community.
Ben Green, CEO of the San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, said: “The Board of Directors of the San Gabriel Pomona Valley and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Balducci. Peter led a wonderful life, full of friends and family. We were blessed to have Peter’s interest and energy over the years as a dedicated volunteer. He has been a mentor and inspiration to volunteers young and old. Peter was always willing to offer advice and comfort to those in need. Peter will be missed. We have him and his family in our prayers and will not forget this amazing man.”
Sue Banman, Emergency Services Director of the Pomona Valley Chapter remembers: “Peter came on board helping to make our Red Cross Disaster Team really the best. Peter was a great team builder supporting the other volunteers at all times while also assisting the staff.”
“There are not enough words to list all the ways Peter Balducci has been a key Red Cross volunteer over many years. Peter always found ways to touch the lives of clients, volunteers, partners and the community. He has left a lasting legacy in the lives of fellow Red Crossers who will continue carrying forward the commitment and passion to fulfill our mission in the way Peter always modeled,” concluded Banman.
