The American Red Cross is responding to two significant disaster responses – the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 plane crash at the San Francisco International Airport and the 6-alarm Hallmark House Apartments fire in Redwood City. Our hearts go out to all those affected by these incidents. Both local disasters occurred within 15 hours and were only 16 miles apart. The Red Cross workforce quickly mobilized from the Bay Area, Capital Region, Central Valley, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley, and Sonoma Chapters to respond to each incident.
Asiana Airlines #214 Crash
Working closely with local, state, and federal authorities, the American Red Cross quickly responded to the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 plane crash at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) on Saturday, July 6, 2013 to provide support to the first responders, passengers, crew, and their families.
As part of the Aviation Disaster Family Assistance Act, the Red Cross, working with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is responsible for providing and coordinating crisis counseling, health services, and other services as requested by NTSB. The Red Cross is also responsible for coordinating with partner agencies to provide additional support services, including, but not limited to, translation services and childcare.
More than 150 Red Cross disaster workers from throughout the Greater Bay Area as well as Sonoma and Central Valley are assisting passengers, crew, and their families, by providing emotional support, replacement medications and eyeglasses, and translators who are bilingual in Cantonese, Mandarin, and Korean.
Our mobile feeding units provided food, beverages, and snacks to the responders, investigators, and partnering agencies after the crash. To date, the Red Cross has provided more than 1,800 meals and 2,400 snacks.
Right now the Red Cross has what it needs to support these response efforts. The best thing for people to do right now is keep the passengers and their families in their thoughts and prayers.
Redwood City Apartment Fire
Early Sunday, July 7, 2013, the Red Cross, in partnership with the San Mateo Office of Emergency Services, opened an evacuation center at the Fair Oaks Community Center to assist those displaced by the 6-alarm fire at Hallmark House Apartments. Later that day, those affected were transitioned to an overnight shelter at the National Guard Armory at 939 Valota Road in Redwood City. The shelter was closed on Friday, July 12, at noon.
The 72-unit apartment building that housed more than 100 people was deemed uninhabitable by the Redwood City Fire Department. A Service Center was opened National Guard Armory for three days. At the Service Center, those affected will be able to meet with Red Cross caseworkers and partner agencies to receive services to help begin their recovery.
The Service Center will be relocated to the North Fair Oaks Community Center (2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City) on Monday, July 15, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Red Cross and local partners will continue assisting affected residents with their long-term recovery plans while continuing to assess their critical needs.
To date, the Red Cross has provided more than 2,300 meals and 112 shelters stays. Red Cross volunteers will work with the San Mateo County Human Services Agency, Public Health Agency, Behavioral and Mental Health, and Housing Authority Agency as well as other partners including The Salvation Army, Project Access, and Tzu Chi to assist residents through the long-term recovery process.
