Reed Cross Helping Families Displaced by Fire

Fire Safety

Colorado Springs, CO – 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 18, 2014 – The Red Cross Pikes Peak Chapter Disaster Action Team has been busy in Colorado Springs today supporting people affected by two home fires.

At 6:00 a.m. our team was called to a home fire on Vaquero Circle N. The team helped seven adults, four children and their pets begin their recovery work. Temporary lodging was found and the families were helped with food, clothing and transportation costs. Additional support was also provided in the form of referrals to other agencies for assistance.

Around 11:00 a.m. the Disaster Action Team was called to help at a fire on LaSalle St. Only one apartment was affected by the fire with one adult displaced. Casework for that person is still on going.

Fortunately there were no injuries with either of these home fires.

On average, the American Red Cross is called upon to help people in 63,000 home fires each year in the United States and residential fires destroy over $7 billion worth of property every year. Cooking fires account for 43 percent of all home fires followed by heating equipment and electrical distribution and lighting equipment.

The Red Cross urges people to do a full fire safety check of their residence in an effort to prevent home fires. A fire preventions and safety checklist is available on line at www.redcross.org/prepare and from your local fire department.
