American Red Cross to host volunteer open house

The American Red Cross will host a volunteer open house at the American Red Cross, 105 Gano Street, Providence, Rhode Island on Wednesday, December 2 from 12 – 3 p.m. All current volunteers and those interested in volunteering with the Red Cross are encouraged to attend.

The Red Cross is seeking volunteers for all lines of service and leadership positions but is especially looking for volunteers interested in becoming Disaster Action Team members. The Disaster Action Team members primarily assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire or other disaster.

“Disaster Action Team members are needed every day across our region,” said Elizabeth McDonald, Senior Disaster Director, American Red Cross Rhode Island. “On average, we respond to about two home fires per day, and our volunteers are the ones who answer the call to provide assistance. More volunteers are needed to help those impacted by disaster.”

Nationally, the Red Cross responds to a disaster every eight minutes. Last year, the American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region responded to nearly 1,200 disasters, the majority of which were home fires.

“We are headed into the winter season, which is a notoriously busy time for home fires,” said McDonald. “We want to invite volunteers to join us now, so we can have them trained and ready to help when their neighbors experience a disaster.”

The volunteer open house is designed to introduce new volunteers to the history of the Red Cross and to learn about all of the local volunteer opportunities available. In addition to disaster action team volunteers, there are a variety of leadership and other volunteer opportunities available that utilize a variety of skillsets and availability. Those interested in attending the session or becoming a volunteer must register in advance online at redcross.org/ri/volunteer or by calling 860-678-2788 for more information.
