Red Cross Recruiting Disaster Volunteers on the Island of Hawaii

We need more West Hawaii communities prepared for disasters before they occur with trained volunteers ready to respond.

The American Red Cross is recruiting disaster volunteers on the west side on the Island of Hawaii. Barney Sheffield, Hawaii Disaster Coordinator, said, “We need more West Hawaii communities prepared for disasters before they occur. One critical piece is to have trained volunteers ready to respond. We welcome new volunteers to join the Red Cross ohana.” All disaster training is provided free of charge.

If interested in becoming a Red Cross volunteer, the first step is to register online at To register, click on Volunteer, Becoming a Volunteer. Once applications are completed through the Volunteer Connection system, the Red Cross will contact interested individuals about signing up for basic disaster classes.

All new disaster volunteers must take a series of free disaster trainings; the entire series must be attended. The next series of volunteer trainings will be held at Hualalai Academy, 74-4966 Kealakaa Street in Kailua-Kona in November on the following dates:

  • Disaster Services: An Overview | Saturday, 11/16/13, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Shelter Fundamentals | Saturday, 11/16/13, 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Red Cross encourages all families to make a disaster plan to include an evacuation plan with two different routes of escape, a communications plan to help families reconnect after disaster and a disaster supplies kit that is readily available to aid in a quick evacuation. Information on developing a family plan is available to the public at, or a brochure can be requested by calling 245-4919.
