Six Hawaii Red Cross volunteers are deploying to Texas to help with the Red Cross response to Tropical Depression Bill amidst the recovery of the severe flooding that took place in May. One volunteer from the Big Island will be assisting in Security Services, three volunteers from Oahu will be assisting in Disaster Mental Health Services, Health Services and Information and Planning Services, and two Maui County volunteers will be assisting in Disaster Mental Health Services and Health Services.
The Red Cross is responding throughout the state of Texas as Tropical Storm Bill made landfall on Tuesday, dropping as much as 4 to 8 inches of rain with some areas expected to see a foot of rainfall. Red Cross shelters were still open from the earlier Texas flooding and more were set up to assist people in the path of the new storm. The Red Cross is prepared to open additional shelters and is ready to send in additional relief supplies and emergency vehicles if needed.
The May flooding in the Lone Star State affected thousands of homes. About 2,000 Red Cross workers have been on the ground helping for weeks, providing thousands of shelter stays in more than 50 shelters, serving more than 242,000 meals and snacks, and distributing more than 130,000 relief supplies. Red Cross workers are also providing health services such as replacing lost eyeglasses and medications and providing emotional support to those affected. Trained Red Cross workers are also in multi-agency resource centers, meeting one-on-one with people to help them plan their recovery and receive help from other agencies.
