Red Cross to Offer Disaster Responder Boot Camp

Heroes Camp: Volunteer Training
Unfortunately, Kansas is no stranger to disaster, whether it's a tornado, ice storm, or home fire.

When disaster strikes, Kansans respond generously to help their friends and neighbors who are suffering. However, it’s outside of a disaster that much of the groundwork to responding is laid. Recruiting and training Red Cross volunteers to respond in the greatest time of need remains a focus for the American Red Cross Kansas Capital Area Chapter.

To help equip people with the skills necessary for disaster response, the chapter is offering a Disaster Boot Camp event on Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11 at the Topeka Red Cross office. Anyone interested in becoming a local disaster volunteer is invited to the free event. The only requirement is a desire to help those in need.

"Unfortunately, Kansas is no stranger to disaster, whether it's a tornado, ice storm, or home fire,” said Lisa Biggs, Disaster Program Manager. “People are willing to help their fellow Kansans when they face the devastating loss of their home, belongings, and sense of security. Our Disaster Boot Camp is designed to give people the tools they need to help the Red Cross respond quickly and efficiently in the wake of disaster.”

The American Red Cross helps meet the immediate needs of disaster victims, providing of food and water, shelter, and emotional support following a disaster. Boot Camp attendees will learn the skills needed to support those during a time of greatest need, and be prepared to act when the next disaster strikes.

Disaster Boot Camp is free and open to anyone age 18 and older. To register, call 785-234-0568 or email valerie.cundy@redcross.org.
