Big Y Donates $20,000 to American Red Cross Hurricane Matthew Disaster Relief

Big Y World Class Markets collected donations from customers an employees from October 15 - 29 for American Red Cross Disaster Relief in Hurricane Matthew.

Community and employee donations along with additional support from Big Y resulted in a donation of $20,000 which will be donated to both Massachusetts and Connecticut American Red Cross Chapters in support of the ongoing relief efforts in the United States and Haiti affected by the disaster.

A formal check presentation to the Connecticut American Red Cross was held on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at the Rocky Hill Big Y World Class Market.  Megan Moriarty, Store Director, of Big Y Foods presented the contribution to Liz Barton-Fongemie, Director Resource Development & Corporate Partnerships and Krista Coletti, Chief Development Officer, of the Connecticut & Rhode Island American Red Cross Chapter.

People in the southeast continue to deal with the devastation from Hurricane Matthew almost a month after the storm made landfall. The American Red Cross is with them, providing food, shelter and help with recovery. Since Matthew first threatened, the Red Cross has mobilized more than 6,200 disaster workers, 279 response vehicles, 25 partner-supported kitchens as well as truckloads of supplies. Overall, Red Cross and community partners have served more than 1.4 million meals and snacks, distributed 284,000 relief items, supported more than 32,000 health and mental health services and provided 102,000 shelter overnight stays.

Big Y, its customers and employees have a strong tradition of supporting those in need through the American Red Cross. Past relief campaigns include the 2004 Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the earthquakes in both Japan and Haiti. The 10-plus-year partnership has raised over a million dollars $465,000 to support both international and domestic disasters.
