Gala in Hartford will Highlight Blood Services

The American Red Cross presents the 11th annual Red White & YOU Ball on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. The theme is “We all bleed red,” and the event will highlight the importance of blood donation.

“Our mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering,” said Mario Bruno, CEO, American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region. “This year’s Ball highlights the important role of blood donation in our mission and how those who roll up their sleeves help save lives each and every day with the Red Cross.”

Each year, the Red White & YOU Ball honors an individual or organization with the Community Impact Award. This year’s award recipient is Colleen Kelly Alexander. Colleen is being honored for her commitment to raising awareness about the need for and importance of blood donation. As a blood donor turned blood recipient, Colleen uses her story of triumph over tragedy to encourage others to donate blood. In 2011, while on a routine bike ride, Colleen was run over by a freight truck. Crushed, ripped apart, and bleeding out, she flat-lined twice, and spent five weeks in a coma. More than 30 surgeries followed. Today, Colleen credits her survival to blood donors, for without the 78 units of blood she received, she would not be here.

“Colleen is a living testament to the importance of blood donation and the impact blood donors can have,” said Bruno. “Colleen’s resilient spirit, support of the Red Cross and her advocacy for blood donation make her a true hero. We are thrilled to honor her with the 2016 Community Impact Award.”

This year’s Ball is being chaired by Cindy Russo, senior vice president for operations with Hartford Healthcare and the Honorary Chair is Lt. Governor, Nancy Wyman. Resiliency Sponsor for the third year is Mohegan Sun. The Ball will be hosted by Emmy Award nominated News 8 Medical reporter, Jocelyn Maminta and promises to be an evening full of fun and inspiration. “The Ball will have something for everyone,” said Bruno. The event begins with a reception at 6:00 p.m., featuring silent auction items, interactive photo booths and live music.

The 11th annual Red White & YOU Ball is set for Saturday, June 11, at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. Tickets and information are available at www.redcross.org/RedCrossBall.
