April is the Month of the Military Child

The American Red Cross of Northeastern New York’s Services to Armed Forces (SAF) program will devote itself to recognizing our area's littlest heroes during April – the Month of the Military Child.

April was designated the Month of the Military Child in 1986 by Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger to officially recognize military children for their accomplishments and resilience. Military children make up a very special part of our nation's population, and the American Red Cross honors their unique sacrifices on behalf of our country.

Community partners including SEFCU, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office and Victoria Acres Equine Facility have teamed up with the Red Cross to offer free children's programming for children of local service members, veterans and military spouses during the April school break. Each event has been designed to help support and celebrate the heroism, character, courage and unique sacrifices made by military kids in our community.

Month of the Military Child events will take place in the Capital Region on the following dates:

- Monday, April 25SEFCU will offer kids not only a behind-the-scenes look at the organization, but also a unique opportunity to give back to their community. To register, e-mail by April 15.

- Wednesday, April 27 –The Albany County Sherriff's Office will give kids a chance to explore the behind-the-scenes work of local police officers for a day. To register, call (518) 694-5160 or email

- Friday, April 29Victoria Acres Equine Facility in Altamont will teach kids everything there is to know about horses through their Horse Sense Program. To register, call (518) 444‐3771 or email

During the Month of the Military Child, the Red Cross will also have the opportunity to deliver Twill blankets to military children across the Eastern New York Region, thanks to a partnership between SEFCU and Twill.
