The American Red Cross of the Mid-Hudson Valley will honor the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department at its 2016 Fire + Ice Gala, and will present the Outstanding Commitment to the Community Award posthumously to firefighter Tim Gunther.

“The City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department has been a tremendous partner to the Red Cross,” said Laurynn Myers, executive director of the American Red Cross of the Mid-Hudson Valley. “It’s a privilege to work alongside them in our efforts to prevent, prepare for, and respond to home fires in our community. This year’s Fire + Ice Gala will be a special night spent honoring them and celebrating the life of Tim Gunther.”

Tim Gunther was a lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley who served for 21 years as a firefighter with the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department. He was honored several times throughout his career for outstanding service, receiving a General Salute to Heroes award in 2008 and a unit citation award in 2011. Gunther answered his final call on May 4, 2015, responding to a deadly fire on Church Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. He was taken from the scene of the fire to the hospital with cardiac-related issues, and passed away the following day. Gunther is survived by his wife, Christine, and children, Casey and Tess, who will accept the Red Cross award on his behalf.

Chief Mark W. Johnson will represent the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department at the gala. “I am honored on behalf of the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department to accept this great recognition,” he said. “If it were not for the Red Cross, the Poughkeepsie Fire Department would not have been able to increase the safety of our citizens with the installations of hundreds of new smoke detectors.”

The 2016 Fire + Ice Gala is sponsored by Central Hudson Gas and Electric, The Bruderhof CommunitiesUlster Savings Bank, Health Alliance of the Hudson Valley, Marshall & Sterling Insurance, and Catskill Hudson Bank. The event will be held on Thursday, April 28 at The Grandview in Poughkeepsie. The event will feature gourmet cuisine and open bar courtesy of The Grandview, entertainment by Bill Beale Productions, and spirited live and silent auctions. Q92’s Morning Mayor, Joe Daily, will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross of the Mid-Hudson Valley, serving Columbia, Dutchess, Greene and Ulster counties.
