Red Cross Responds to Oahu and Kauai Flooding Update

Volunteers met with affected residents and ensured their immediate emergency needs were met.

Red Cross volunteers on Kauai and Oahu are continuing to meet with residents affected by the April floods to ensure that immediate emergency needs are met and to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed to help with the recovery process.

From April 13th to April 19th, the Red Cross provided shelter to 110 individuals on Kauai. On both Oahu and Kauai, nearly 100 health services and 121 mental health contacts have been made. Over 70 Hawaii Red Cross volunteers also served nearly 350 meals and distributed 61 clean up kits, 27 comfort kits, 63 recovery booklets, and 265 relief items such as cleaning solutions, sponges, and brooms.  

A total of five Oahu Red Cross volunteers have been deployed to Kauai to help with casework, sheltering, mental health, health services (nurse), and government relations.  

Mahalo to Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware for donations of clean-up items like hand sanitizer, bleach, trash bags, gloves, and mosquito repellent for those affected by the floods.

In addition, Red Cross disaster assessment, mental health, and logistics volunteers staffed Disaster Recovery Centers on Oahu from Monday, April 23 to Thursday, April 26 at Waimanalo District Park and Koko Head District Park.  Along with State and city agencies and non-government organizations, the Hawaii Red Cross provided information about available services and assistance.
