Because of BHP Billiton’s dedication to communities where its employees work and live, we are able to continue offering much-needed food, shelter and comfort to those who have been devastated by the Louisiana storms.

The American Red Cross today announced that BHP Billiton has made a critical disaster relief grant in response to the recent flooding in Louisiana, Texas and southern Arkansas.

Headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, BHP Billiton is a major global commodities producer. The company’s Petroleum business has its headquarters in Houston, Texas, and manages significant oil and gas operations in South and West Texas, the Haynesville Shale in Louisiana and the Fayetteville Shale in Arkansas.

“This spring’s severe flooding has affected our people, our neighbors and the communities where we live and work in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas,” said Steve Pastor, President of BHP Billiton’s global Petroleum business. “BHP Billiton cares about the people in these communities, and we hope this donation will assist with their recovery.”

The American Red Cross is working day and night to help people across the south after the devastating flooding left thousands of people without a place to stay. Since the flooding began, the Red Cross and its partners in Louisiana have provided more than 3,500 overnight stays in 30 shelters; served nearly 251,100 meals and snacks; distributed more than 87,600 relief items, including comfort kits and cleaning supplies; and provided more than 8,500 health and mental health consultations. Louisiana has been hit by numerous storms and consequent flooding during the past year. The Red Cross has been there for each of these events, supporting the people of Louisiana and helping them to recover.

“We are grateful for BHP Billiton’s generous donation,” said Kay W. Wilkins, chief executive of the American Red Cross in Louisiana. “Because of BHP Billiton’s dedication to communities where its employees work and live, we are able to continue offering much-needed food, shelter and comfort to those who have been devastated by the Louisiana storms.”

BHP Billiton is committed to working with local partners to collectively strengthen and build more resilient societies. The company has set a public target to voluntarily invest 1% of pre-tax profits in the regions in which it operates. In addition to the$150,000 donation to the American Red Cross, the BHP Billiton Matched Giving program will donate two dollars for every one dollar donated by an employee.
