Displaced from their homes on opposite ends of Ascension Parish, Jason Gaudet and Ferrell Dearmond found themselves bunking next to each other at a Red Cross shelter at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales. They struck up a friendship—and figured if they can get along with each other in close quarters, they could live together in a post-flood world.
Red Cross caseworker Shannon Altom helped Gaudet and Dearmond develop a plan that would allow them to stay together. They recently moved to a hotel and eventually hope to use the Governor’s Shelter in Home program to repair Ferrell’s residence in French Settlement, where Gaudet will move into the spare bedroom.
“We became friends. We’re gonna make it,” Dearmond said.
