Suzie Smythers Names June Volunteer of the Month

Red Cross Flag

For four years, Susan (Suzie) Smythers has been an invaluable volunteer with the American Red Cross of Western Maryland. With nearly 900 hours recorded, plus nearly 2,000 on-call hours, Suzie has helped countless families during time of need, offering support during times of crisis. In just the last month, Suzie responded to three fires and assisted clients as part of a Disaster Action Team (DAT). She assisted in three incidents that were out of her regular service area, helping with fires in Carroll and Washington County, in addition to her home county of Frederick.

In addition to her DAT responses, Suzie helped meet the medical needs of disaster clients in her role as an RN with Disaster Health Services. It was a particularly challenging month, with two fires involving group homes which served the needs of disabled individuals and one single family event with developmentally-challenged individuals. Suzie stepped up and spent many hours devising solutions to meet the clients’ varied needs. She even stepped up to assist with follow-up client casework during a time when many of our team members were deployed to natural disasters such as floods and wildfires. We are so grateful for her time, spirit, and dedication. Thank you Suzie for all you do!
