Red Cross 2 Mile Run/Walk Celebrates History

Red Cross Boston Run for the Red
We would not be here without our volunteers and donors

As the American Red Cross marks its 100 years of service on Cape Cod, fundraising and celebration events are planned to recognize the significant milestone.

The July 16th Centennial Run for the Red is a two-mile run/walk organized by SEMC Sports, inviting people to come together for fun and celebrate a century of service by the Red Cross while raising money to support the many local services provided by the chapter. The Red Cross receives no state or federal funding and depends upon the support of individuals, businesses and foundations.

“For 100 years, the Cape Cod community has supported our local chapter with their donations, time, talent and treasure. This event helps us to highlight how local support is so vital to our organization. We would not be here serving the community without our volunteers and donors. We thought we’d celebrate our centennial with a fun summer event for runners and walkers in downtown Hyannis. Many thanks to Patrick Lentell of SEMC Sports for creating this event for us,” said Hilary V. Greene, executive director of the Cape, Islands and Southeast Massachusetts chapter.

The Centennial Run for the Red will feature two youth categories. A 100-yard dash for children six and under and a half-mile run for seven -12 year olds are scheduled just prior to the start of the two-mile run. All youth runners will receive a medal for participation with a special prize for the youngest finisher.
The first 100 registrants 13 and over will receive a wick athletic shirt.

In addition to being a fun family event, it is also a fundraiser for the chapter. While celebrating ‘A Century of Serving Cape Cod,’ the goal is to raise $10,000 from the race to support the $100,000 Centennial Fund Drive. Every participant who raises $100 or more will receive an official Cape Cod Chapter Centennial pin. For the top male and female fundraisers, who raise at least $300, the prize is a Brooks Nite Lite Vest. For the second highest male and female fundraisers who raise at least $200, the prize is a SEMC Sports, long sleeve, quarter zip shirt. For the third highest male and female fundraisers who raise at least $100, the prize is a Strawberry Cycle belt buckle.
