His dedication and passion for the Red Cross mission serves as a benchmark for everyone

The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is proud to announce that our Regional Board member and volunteer Paul Kastner has been selected to receive The Presidential Award for Excellence.

Paul has been with the Red Cross of Massachusetts for five years and in that time has served as a living example of the new business model of fully empowered professionals in key volunteer positions.

In 2015, Paul voluntarily took on the Regional Disaster Officer role, filling a void in our regional leadership. Paul understood the needs of the paid and volunteer team and brought stability and calm to the department. His work was excellent and Disaster Services was able to maintain a high level of success during his tenure. He continues to play a key role on the team creating useful monthly reporting that allows us to track our progress and relay important progress to our supporters and national headquarters leadership.

In addition, Paul successfully adapted Red Cross GIS Mapping software to create data maps locating volunteers, both geographically and by line of service, to assist Volunteer Services in recruiting Biomed volunteers. This innovative use of cutting edge technology has now been adopted nationally by the American Red Cross and is being used in all lines of service.

Paul's leadership on the First Aid/Medical Station Leadership team for the Boston Marathon resulted in a successful new program after the 2013 bombing. After 2013, the Boston Athletic Association mandated all 400+ Red Cross volunteers have a minimum of emergency medical technician training. Paul's leadership helped recreate the method and practice of staffing the stations.
His dedication and passion for the Red Cross mission serves as a benchmark for everyone, inspiring and driving success here in Massachusetts.

The Presidential Award for Excellence is given each year to American Red Cross employees and volunteers who demonstrate superior job performance aligning with the organization’s priorities. Twenty seven National Award winners will be honored for their work in fiscal year 2015 at the National Awards Dinner and Ceremony, held March 9, 2016, in Washington D.C.
