ROCHESTER, Minn., April 19, 2016 – Local American Red Cross volunteers are helping more than 40 people after a nine-unit apartment fire on 6th Ave. NW in Austin, Minnesota today.
“After disasters like home fires, Red Cross volunteers meet with those affected and provide assistance for their immediate needs, such as shelter, food, clothing and replacement medications,” said Melanie Tschida, Executive Director for the American Red Cross serving Southeast Minnesota. “Volunteers also comfort and listen to those in need, helping them with long-term recovery planning and connecting them with community resources.”
National American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign
Seven times a day someone in this country dies in a home fire. Countless others suffer injuries. To combat these tragic statistics, the Red Cross has launched a nationwide campaign to reduce the number of deaths and injuries due to home fires by 25 percent over the next five years. The American Red Cross and thousands of Home Fire Campaign partners have helped save at least 83 lives and installed more than a quarter of a million smoke alarms in homes all across the country since the campaign launched in October of 2014.
