Yonkers Families Turn to the Red Cross

Yonkers Families Turn to the Red Cross.
"They’ve provided us with clothes, food, everything that we could possibly need, they’ve provided for us."

Early Friday morning Red Cross volunteers rushed to the scene of a large fire on Linden St. in Yonkers. The fire damaged two buildings and left multiple families homeless.

Red Cross teams arrived at the scene to provide emergency relief to the families displaced by the blaze. A temporary shelter was set up in the gymnasium of a nearby school where eight families including 27 children found a safe place to stay. There, Red Cross teams provided food, games for the kids, blankets and comfort items.

Among those displaced was resident and parent, Carmen Lopez. Carmen, who had never experienced a disaster like this before was thankful for the Red Cross aid she received.

“They’ve been so helpful to us,” she said. “They’ve provided us with clothes, food, everything that we could possibly need, they’ve provided for us.”

Red Cross caseworkers met one on one with the families to provide assistance moving forward including referrals to partner organizations for longer term housing, and other community resources available to them.
