The American Red Cross of the Southern Tier is partnering with the Norwich Fire Department and Preferred Mutual Insurance Company to install free smoke alarms and provide fire safety information in several neighborhoods on Saturday, Sept. 17.
As part of the Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross is joining with fire departments and community groups nationwide to install free smoke alarms in homes that need them. On Sept. 17, local volunteers will meet at the Norwich Fire Department at 10: 30 a.m. and will then go door-to-door on Conkey Ave., Sheldon St. and Canasawacta St.
The American Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent over five years. The Red Cross is asking every household in America to take two simple steps: check their existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home.

In addition to Chenango County, the Southern Tier Chapter serves Broome, Tioga and Tompkins Counties.
