The American Red Cross will be visiting homes in Syracuse’s Washington Square Park neighborhood to schedule free smoke alarm installations and provide home fire safety information to residents. The community event is scheduled for Saturday, July 30 beginning at 10 a.m. Red Cross volunteers and staff will be joined by AmeriCorps members in the door-to-door canvassing operation.
As part of its Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross has been joining with community groups and fire departments nationwide to install free smoke alarms in homes that need them. The initiative is aimed at reducing the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent over the next few years.
The Central New York Chapter installed more than 900 smoke alarms in the past 12 months. In addition to Onondaga County, the chapter serves Cayuga, Cortland, Madison and Oswego Counties.
