Almost two weeks after landfall, the American Red Cross continues its massive response to Hurricane Matthew by providing shelter, food, relief supplies and hope across four states. This widespread relief effort involves three-fourths of our vehicle fleet and has resulted in more overnight stays in shelters than Superstorm Sandy. The Red Cross will be continuing to help in the days and weeks to come, long after flood waters finally start to go down.
Powered by the support of donors, dedicated Red Cross volunteers and employees have mounted a massive response from Florida to the flood-ravaged Carolinas, providing shelter, food and relief supplies for individuals and families devastated by Matthew. In addition, our compassionate workers are offering health services and emotional support to people coping with the hurricane’s destructive aftermath.
Powerful storms like Hurricane Matthew create large amounts of damage and more needs than any one organization can meet on its own. Getting help to some areas of the state is still challenging, due to devastating floodwaters and closed roads. As conditions improve, the Red Cross and our partners will be able to reach more affected communities. The Red Cross is working in close collaboration with government officials and community partners to coordinate response efforts to ensure people receive the help they need as quickly as possible.
As the Red Cross continues to help families across South Carolina, we want to thank our corporate partners. Their support has helped enable us to be there when it is needed most, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from Hurricane Matthew.
