Eastern Mass aims to prepare seniors for anything
The American Red Cross urges everyone to prepare for the worst.

We never know when disaster will strike, but we do know one thing: a disaster will eventually affect us.

The American Red Cross urges everyone to prepare for the worst – and the same goes to any seniors who may have to take cover in a shelter.

Be prepared: Post emergency numbers nears your phone. In some emergencies, service may not be available, so make other plans to contact those in your network.

Get a kit: Put together a disaster preparedness kit – anything you would need to get by for three days. Store it in a bag that has wheels, for your convenience. Be sure it has an ID.

Label any equipment, like wheelchairs, canes or walkers, with your name, address and phone number. Check your bag often – make sure it’s up-to-date. Replace food, water and batteries, and refresh any medications.

Checking into a shelter: Notify the shelter management of any special needs you may have.

Let your contacts know where you are going.

Make arrangements for your pets – bet sure to take them with you when you leave.

Tune in: Listen to the news to find out about shelter openings.
