The Annual Red Cross Ball is a Sure Sign of Spring

Last year, New York came to Maine. This year, the Enchanted Ocean takes center stage.

The annual Red Cross Ball, a highlight on the Mid Coast social calendar, brings people together for an evening of dining and dancing, all for a good cause. The Ball, now in its 27th year, supports Red Cross programs and services in the Mid Coast area and around the state.

“The vast majority of our work is assisting victims of home fires, providing food, clothing, emotional support, and emergency shelter,” says April Caron, Executive Director of the Red Cross Central and Mid Coast Maine Chapter. “The past 6 months have been challenging, both in terms of the number of fires as well as their size.”

The Red Cross responded to 38 fires in February, the busiest month in memory. Recent responses also include several large, multi-unit apartment buildings.

In addition to the assistance provided to fire victims, the Red Cross has also launched a 5-year program to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries through fire safety education and the installation of smoke alarms. Funds raised at the Ball will also help support those efforts.

The theme of this year’s ball, Enchanted Ocean, promises to help Mainers forgot about the harsh winter and look forward to warm summer breezes.

The Ball will be Saturday, April 11, from 6 – 11 p.m., at the Hilton Garden Inn, 5 Park Street, Freeport.
