Unum stands Ready to help Red Cross

Red Cross

Sixteen employees from Unum are ready to respond when a disaster strikes, part of a new partnership with the American Red Cross of Maine.

The Red Cross program, Ready When the Time Comes, trains corporate volunteer teams that can be quickly deployed for short-duration disaster events in the area.

“With this program we can have 10 or 15 people on site with one phone call,” says Paul Clark, Disaster Program Manager for the Red Cross. “This is particularly critical with a larger event — such as the opening of a shelter following a widespread power outage — when we need people who can respond quickly for a short duration.”

Unum is the first organization in the state to participate in the initiative. “I joined the Ready When the Time Comes program to make a grass roots impact on our community,” says Karen Cassette, a National Client Manager at Unum, who also volunteers for the annual Red Cross Real Heroes recognition event. “Often times, I donate money or volunteer for organizations and do not really get to experience the impact on the community. This is an opportunity for me to make a real difference and experience the impact my time and actions can make on an individual.”

The Unum team completed a basic disaster response training session last month, and will participate in a simulated shelter drill in October.
