The American Red Cross is encouraging residents to celebrate the American spirit by making an appointment to donate blood September 11 from 12PM to 5:45PM at the Lenawee County Fairgrounds (602 N. Dean Street) in Adrian. Each year, the President of the United States designates September 11 as ‘Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance’, encouraging citizens to find and volunteer for service opportunities. The Great Lakes Blood Services Region is giving donors a chance to become a hero to someone in need by asking them to roll-up their sleeves and give blood.
“As you know, the American Red Cross has a rich tradition of community service and volunteerism,” said Jim Flickema, CEO of the Great Lakes Blood Services Region. “This is a great opportunity for our donors and sponsors to give back to their communities and help replenish the blood supply following the challenging summer months.”
Summer is always a tough time to ensure a sufficient blood supply, as regular donors become busy with summer activities and are unable to make rolling up a sleeve part of their schedules. By donating during this region-wide campaign, you’ll help ensure that blood is available for patients whenever and wherever it’s needed. Donations through the Red Cross could help patients at local hospitals or help those who must travel outside the area for medical treatment.
Everyone who comes out to donate will receive a free American Red Cross baseball hat, while supplies last. Donors will also enjoy a hot, home-cooked 3-course meal in the Red Cross canteen.

About the American Red Cross
The Great Lakes Blood Services Region serves 65 counties, and needs to collect about 650 units of blood a day to meet patient need in hospitals. In addition to supplying about 40 percent of the nation’s blood, the American Red Cross teaches lifesaving skills, provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization—not a government agency—and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. 08/13AP389
