Red Cross Conducting Disaster Drill With Multiple Community Organizations

HOLLAND, Mich., May 12, 2014 The American Red Cross of Ottawa County is inviting the media to attend a disaster drill at an assisted living facility on May 21.

The Red Cross is partnering with multiple organizations and agencies including Ottawa County Emergency Management, The City of Holland Public Safety, Holland Victim Advocates, and AMR Ambulance. The drill will take place at a retirement facility in Holland from 5:30-8:00 p.m. A mock Red Cross shelter will also be established near the facility as part of the drill.

“By conducting drills of this nature, organizations can provide an opportunity for their staff to work with each other and learn how they can rely on each other to service the needs of our community when disaster strikes,” said Mike Mitchell, Chapter Executive for the American Red Cross of Ottawa County. “This is the right time to find how we can improve our services, to respond should a disaster strike.”

This drill is the first of many exercises that will occur over the next few months as the Red Cross embarks on a community resiliency project. Several weeks of preparation have already taken place.

Media outlets interested in attending this disaster drill are asked to notify the Red Cross by 3:00 p.m. on May 21 by contacting Kelly Hudson, at Kelly.Hudson@redcross.org or by calling 616-862-9185. Details on the media staging area and arrival times will be shared upon media outlets RSVP.
