American Red Cross of Northwest Michigan Honors Veterans and Hosts 3rd Annual Golf Outing

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., August 21, 2014To honor local veterans and prepare the community for disaster, the American Red Cross of Northwest Michigan is partnering with the American Legion Post 35 to host their 3rd Annual Golf Outing at the Elmbrook Golf Club on Thursday, September 4, 2014.


Breakfast and registration for the event will begin at 8 a.m. The morning will include the recognition of Navy veteran Gary Hlavka, who was selected as this year’s Red Cross veteran honoree. Hlavka served on Destroyer Escort Radar Ships in the North Pacific for six years in the United States Navy. The Red Cross will hold a press conference on Friday, August 22, at 10 a.m. in the Cherry Capital Airport conference room to announce Hlavka as the veteran honoree at this year’s golf outing.


Since his retirement from the Navy in 1965, Hlavka has been an active member in several veterans’ organizations in the Grand Traverse area. He joined the American Legion Post 35 nearly 34 years ago and served in a host of positions including Sergeant of Arms and Post Commander. His service continues today as a committee member for the Department of Michigan American Legion – National Defense and Foreign Relations.


The golf outing will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Proceeds from the event will enable the local Red Cross to provide vital educational and emergency relief services, including services to the armed forces, for residents of Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau Counties.
