Northern Minnesota Residents Receive Red Cross Recognition

Our incredible volunteers are what make the Red Cross mission possible.

The Northland and North Star Chapters of the American Red Cross Northern Minnesota Region have announced their 2013 Volunteer Award Winners for their outstanding support of the American Red Cross.

“Our incredible volunteers are what make the Red Cross mission possible,” says Phil Hansen, CEO of the American Red Cross Northern Minnesota Region. “I can’t thank this year’s award recipients enough for their generosity of time, and the genuine care and help they’ve provided others during their service with the Red Cross.”

The Award Winners:

Marty Mehling, from Duluth, received the Northland Board Member of the Year Award for 19 years of outstanding service. A retired firefighter, Mehling has responded to disasters, including fires, floods, and wildfires, and helped provide chapter leadership.

Christina Hujanen, from Tower, received the Northern Minnesota Region’s Rookie Volunteer of the Year Award for excellent service during her first year as a disaster responder who deployed three times to help during Superstorm Sandy.

Kirk Douglas, from Duluth, received the Gladys Swanson Disaster Volunteer of the Year Award for being an outstanding disaster responder who can expertly open an emergency shelter or help coordinate fund raising events. He’s indispensable to the Northland Red Cross team.

Northland News Center received the Community Partner of the Year Award for providing years of support for helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies of all sizes; and for helping raise funds for disaster response.

Sam’s Club in Duluth received the Mary Coultrap Johnson Philanthropy Award for an organization that helps provide critical support to the Red Cross and its humanitarian mission to alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies. This award also recognizes Sam’s Club employee Tim Sundstrom who serves on the Northland Chapter’s board of directors and gives generously of himself to the Red Cross and its mission.

David Heyser, from Duluth, received posthumously the Mary Coultrap Johnson Philanthropy Award for an individual who, for years gave his time, expertise, and financial support to the Red Cross. Heyser responded to local and national disasters.

The 2013 Northland and North Star Volunteer Award winners were honored on July 31st at the Country Inn and Suites in Duluth.

The American Red Cross Regional Volunteer Awards raise awareness about volunteers whose extraordinary actions contribute to the Red Cross mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies. Award winners are recognized for leadership, teamwork, health and safety, outreach, behind the scenes work and disaster relief efforts.
