Disaster preparedness is a topic the American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter staff and volunteers address frequently when speaking at various events around their 21-county coverage area. It’s also something the chapter actively takes part in and recently received a Ready Rating certificate from the American Red Cross.
“We preach disaster preparedness,” said Executive Director Dave Griffith. “It was only natural that we practice what we preach.
“By taking part in the Red Cross’s Ready Rating program we were able to improve areas in our office where we were lacking and by making those improvements we will be even more ready to respond when a disaster strikes.”
Ready Rating is a program that helps businesses, schools and organizations become prepared for disasters and other emergencies.
Program members have access to one-of-a-kind tools, resources and information for evaluating and improving their ability to withstand disaster, maintain operations, and protect lives and property.
“When a disaster hits this area, the Red Cross won’t be immune just because we’re the Red Cross,” Griffith said. “We could be just as affected as anyone else. Completing the Ready Rating program just makes us that more prepared when something does happen.”
Ready Rating Program members complete a confidential assessment of their current readiness level for emergencies and receive immediate, customized feedback with tips and resources to improve their readiness scores.
“We didn’t cut any corners or get any preferential treatment,” Griffith said. “We went through the program just like any other office would.”
New components make it even easier to get started or to enhance current emergency response plans:
The Ready Rating program is consistent with Private Sector or PS-Prep Standards developed by the Department of Homeland Security. Anheuser-Busch Companies is the program’s national founding sponsor and Sam’s Club is a national sponsor.
