Meeting the immediate emergency needs of a family who just lost their home in a disaster can mean as much to the American Red Cross volunteer who met those needs as it does to those who receive the help.
“Being a Red Cross volunteer is very rewarding,” said Judy Terry, a long-time volunteer who lives in Rolla. “Just seeing the faces of a family after helping them is something special.”
The American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter is seeking to build its volunteer base in Phelps, Maries, Dent and Pulaski counties.
“The need for more volunteers is great,” Terry said. “Sometimes it can be real difficult, especially if there are multiple events going on at the same time, like we experienced in the latest disaster with the flooding.”
There are a number of volunteer opportunities within the Red Cross. Training is required to be a Red Cross volunteer and sessions are available at various times.
“There is no set amount of time a person has to give to be a Red Cross volunteer,” said Phillip Iman, a disaster specialist with the chapter who also coordinates volunteer activities. “Red Cross volunteers can fit the time they want to give into their schedule.”
