Veterans living in facilities in Mexico and St. James received some holiday cheer Monday from the American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter through the Holiday Mail for Heroes program.
Community Market Manager Clayton Kennedy, Major Gifts Officer Nancy Sell and members of the Audrain-Montgomery Leadership Council presented holiday cards to veterans in Mexico, while Executive Director Dave Griffith represented the Red Cross and passed out cards at the St. James location.
“I loved the opportunity to wish these veterans a Merry Christmas,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy and Sell along with volunteers Raymond and Doris Iman and Jolene Davis broke into teams with staff members of the Mexico facility to visit and drop off cards to every one of the 150 resident veterans.
Griffith teamed with the staff at the St. James facility to present cards to veterans living there.
Red Cross representatives stopped by rooms for a brief visit to share pleasantries and holiday greetings with the residents.
“It was just a wonderful experience,” Kennedy said.
Veterans at the Mexico facility, who represent every branch of service, previously signed their own cards to be included in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program. Their cards were sent to Washington D.C. along with millions of others gathered through the program. Cards collected through Holiday Mail for Heroes were delivered to veterans and service members serving in the United States and around the world.
“I was very moved to learn that residents of the Mexico facility had written their own cards to wish happy holidays to other soldiers and veterans,” Kennedy said.
Cards distributed to veterans included prepared holiday greetings and some made handmade -mostly by school children.
