Last week, there was an urgent need for food at the Rockingham County Red Cross food pantry. Due to the temporary closure of another food bank in the county, the Red Cross served clients from both facilities. That took the supply very low as we entered the new year.
Since then many great things have happened. Last Friday, Vicki Clark, and Cliff Ellington from Ruger in Mayodan dropped by and donated about 500 pounds of food.
Over the weekend, the Gold Wing Riders rallied the troops and met at Food Lion in Eden to do some shopping. The ended up with more than any motorcycle could carry. The escorted three pick-up trucks full of food to the Reidsville Chapter. They ended up with 2,550 pounds of food.
The biggest donation came from Food Lion. On Wednesday, they loaded up a truck and brought 265 cases of food. That’s 4,500 pounds of food! They also brought several of their men to unload the truck and stack it in the food pantry. That alone would have been more than our small staff could handle.
We thank everyone who donated to the food pantry in Rockingham County in the past week. Because of you, your neighbors can put food on the table.
However, the need is constant. How long will all of this food last? According to Melissa Smith from the Rockingham County Chapter, “It’s hard to say how long this food will last. It really depends on the number of people who come in needing food.” With people losing extended unemployment benefits and problems with food stamps, the need is likely to go up.
If you can ever donate, please drop food by the Rockingham County Chapter Monday –Friday 8:30am-4pm. You can also send a check. Make it out to the American Red Cross and put “Rockingham County food pantry” in the memo line. Please send checks to:
