The American Red Cross hosted partners from Xcel Energy and Border States Electric for the 2014 ‘Day of Service’ at the Red Cross office in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where employees from both companies learned about the organization's mission, while serving to support it.
Employees volunteered their time by putting together 300 personal disaster preparedness kits for families in the community. These kits are important for all individuals when disaster strikes and families are left without the most basic essential needs. These kits include items that a person would need for a 72-hour span. They include items such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, personal hygiene products, and several other items.
In addition, those in attendance helped paint the warehouse where Red Cross disaster relief supplies were kept and also learned hands-only CPR.
“We certainly appreciate representatives of both Border States and Xcel Energy coming together to support this project,” said Tony Burke, Red Cross Executive Director. “Everyone should have a kit they can grab if disaster strikes so preparation is very important.”
“We have seen how important it is to be prepared with flooding and tornadoes that have affected so many areas,” said Jim Wilcox, Principal Manager at Xcel Energy. ”You never know when you might be evacuated and we at Xcel value the services of the Red Cross because if disaster strikes and power is out, our customers will be taken care of by the Red Cross.”
Xcel Energy also provided a donation of $5,000 to support Red Cross disaster services.
