Helping Families Prepare for Hurricane Season

User News Image
New Jersey is all too familiar with the impact of these storms. It’s important that people prepare.

The American Red Cross was present at Home Depot Hurricane Preparedness Workshops throughout the North Jersey Region on Saturday, May 31. Red Cross volunteers were on hand to talk with families about the importance of preparing for Hurricane Season, which runs from June 1 through November 30.

The volunteers provided guidance on how to create an emergency preparedness kit and develop a family disaster plan, demonstrated the free Red Cross Hurricane App and provided hurricane safety tips to more than 700 people at five Home Depot locations.

“Although it’s hard to imagine while the weather is nice and our skies are blue, New Jersey is all too familiar with the impact of the devastation these storms can bring,” said Mathieu Nelessen, regional CEO, American Red Cross North Jersey Region. “It’s important that families and individuals make time to build an emergency kit, create an evacuation plan, and download the Red Cross Hurricane App to help make it through the next storm safely.”

Seven-year-old Sean Volker visited the Home Depot Hurricane Preparedness Workshop in Bridgewater with his family where Red Cross volunteer Julie Daigle talked to Sean about how he can help his family prepare for emergencies. Sean proudly told Julie about his family’s emergency plan and their designated meeting place outside their house. Impressed, Julie gave the young man a glow stick to add to his family’s emergency preparedness kit.

PREPARE BEFORE THE STORM. Now is the time for families and individuals to build an emergency kit and create an evacuation plan. The Red Cross has tools and safety steps that people can take before tropical storms or hurricanes threaten.

DOWNLOAD THE HURRICANE APP. The free Red Cross Hurricane App puts real time information on hurricane safety at your fingertips. This app, which has more than 970,000 downloads, is a must have for anyone who lives in an area where a hurricane may strike or has loved ones who do.

Features of the Hurricane App include information on Red Cross shelters and a toolkit with a flashlight, strobe light and alarm. The one-touch “I’m Safe” button lets someone instantly tell family and friends they are okay. People who are traveling or have loved ones in hurricane-prone areas can also use the app to receive weather alerts.

The Hurricane App can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross. Learn more about all of the Red Cross mobile apps at redcross.org/mobileapps.
