On Thursday, January 30th at the Camden County Blood Donor Center, two lucky New Jersey blood donors received tickets to the big game this Sunday.

The American Red Cross, as a member of The NJ Workplace Blood Donor Coalition, thanked both donors for giving blood during the Super Community Blood Drive campaign by presenting them each with a pair of tickets to Super Bowl XLVIII at Met Life Stadium, on behalf of The 2014 NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee.

Paul Branagan of Carteret and Katie Wilkinson of Mt. Laurel were randomly selected from thousands of donors who participated in the Super Community Blood Drive campaign by donating blood.

“I’m very excited for the game,” said Branagan. “I’ll be bringing my son with me and we’re glad to hear that although Sunday’s weather will be cold, it won’t be the extremely frigid temperatures we’ve seen recently.”

Since the beginning of January, winter storms and freezing temperatures have resulted in more than 600 American Red Cross blood drive cancellations and nearly 20,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations. Overall, 26 states and Washington, D.C. have had blood drives canceled because of weather. While thousands of people from across the country responded to the call for blood and platelet donations issued by the Red Cross earlier this month, there continues to be an urgent need for blood donors with type O, especially type O negative.

Katie Wilkinson surprised her fiancé Nick with the news about the tickets at today’s event. The couple will marry this Saturday and will attend the Super Bowl XLVIII at Met Life Stadium on Sunday.

The 2014 NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee created this unique campaign called the Super Community Blood Drive to raise public awareness of the constant need for blood donations and to motivate more New Jersey residents to donate blood.

Every person who presented to donate blood between May 24, 2013 and January 17, 2014, in the New York City area and New Jersey was entered into a sweepstakes to win tickets to Super Bowl XLVIII.
